Contemporary calf (worn, rebacked and recornered, boards detached, crudely reinforced on hinges and some gutters). Provenance: William Vaughan (inscriptions on titles of i and ii). A REMARKABLE SAMMELBAND ON THE REBUILDING OF THE LONDON DOCKS, FROM THE LIBRARY OF WILLIAM VAUGHAN By the late 18th century, London no longer had sufficient capacity for the rapidly increasing volume of river-borne trade that passed through the city, and the rebuilding and enlargement of the existing docks became a pressing matter. One of the principal activists was Vaughan, a merchant and director of the Royal Exchange Assurance Corporation, who 'became one of the first authorities' on the question (DNB XX, p.187), and gave evidence to the parliamentary committee established to consider the issue. Vaughan was also one of the founder members of the committee of the London-Dock Company, and published a series of pamphlets upon the subject, which were later re-issued as A Collection of Tracts on Wet-Docks for the Port of London (London: 1797). The necessary acts of parliament were eventually passed and docks capable of supporting the massive inscrease in trade through the 19th century were built; as the DNB states, 'the great development of London as a port must be regarded as partly due to [Vaughan's] unceasing exertions' (XX, p.188). Sold as a collection of pamphlets, not subject to return.
