VEGETIUS, Flavius Renatus. Vier Bücher der Ritterschafft . Augsburg: Heinrich Stainer, 1534. 4° (290 x 195mm). 137 woodcuts of which 130 full-page, all with modern colouring. (Inside margin and one corner of title repaired, occasional light marginal dampstain or spotting, short tear in last leaf.) 18th-century vellum with spine titled in manuscript (faint dampstain, light spotting and soiling). Provenance : unidentified cardinal (binding). Second Stainer edition, adding 10 full-page woodcuts to the 120 which had appeared in his edition of 1529. These illustrations of machines of war, some fanciful, resemble Valturius and are based on the edition printed at Erfurt in 1511. 'The most influential military treatise in the western world from Roman times to the 19th century' (Willard p.184). Not in Adams; Graesse VII, 271; Willard, Christine de Pizan , pp.184-6; cf. Lipperheide Qb1 (1529 ed.).
