VENICE ca 1736-37 -- [PRINTS]. MARIESCHI, Michele (1696-1743). "Architectural Fantasy." Venice, ca 1736-37. Etching and engraving, 335 x 470 mm. Marieschi's plate is the "only extant etched example [of the fantastic architectural interior for theater decoration] and has been dated c. 1736-7. It encapsulates the Gothic and classical worlds of the Venetian Republic, and is characteristic of the mixed styles favoured by north Italian stage designers" (Andrew Robison, ed., The Glory of Venice: Art in the Eighteenth Century , 1994, no. 164).
