The first three of the Venetian campaigns were conducted by Francesco Morosini (1618-1694, 'the Peloponnesian'), former governor of Crete when it fell to the Turks in 1669, and the greatest commander of his day. He captured the Archipelago, and defeated the Turks at the Dardanelles, Corinth, Mistra, Athens, and in the Morea. Leoni da Maijerato also served under Girolamo Cornaro at the siege of Castel Nuovo and Domenico Mocenigo at the siege of Canea. Gualdo Priorato of Vicenza wrote on military matters including a twelve volume work on warfare ( Arte della guerra , 1681).
