VERDI, Giuseppe. Autograph letter signed to Giulio Ricordi, Sant'Agata, 2 June 1900, one page, 8vo , on a bifolium. In the last year of his life, Verdi promises his old friend and publisher that he will take it easy. The letter opens with thanks for a transfer of 1,255 lire. He intends to look after his affairs at Sant'Agata, 'which will be annoying and long, but I hope not complicated', and then 'after that, following your advice not to worry about anything, I intend to set myself to sleeping day and night'. After the death of Peppina in November 1897, Verdi spent much of his last years in the company of Ricordi, of Arrigo Boito, and of Teresa Stolz. He died at the Grand Hotel, Milan, on 27 January 1901. This is one of the latest Verdi letters to have been offered at auction in recent years.
