Very fine mid-19th century Cantonese carved ivory and painted fan, retailed by Volong, Canton, with finely carved and pierced sticks detailed with figures in landscapes, the paper fan with continuous frieze of courtiers in pagodas, applied with painted ivory faces, 28cm high, housed within japanned black lacquered case with painted silk lining and trade label for Volong. N.B. Volong are known retailers of high quality fans, a similar example bearing the same trade label to the box is in The Queen's Collection, Collection no. RCIN 25072 CONDITION REPORT Box- very minor wear to outside extremities and slight staining to interior. Fan- typical wear at folds, some losses/deterioration where the sticks are fixed to paper, some becoming detached. Ivory is slightly stained otherwise ok
