VESALIUS, ANDREAS. De humani corporis fabrica libri septem. Basel: Joannes Oporinus (August 1555). Pictorial woodcut title showing Vesalius dissecting a female in a crowded medical theater, woodcut portrait of Vesalius on a6v, folding woodcut diagram of the circulatory system (p. 505), an unpaginated leaf signed X2 with eight woodcut anatomical details intended to be cut out and superimposed on this woodcut illustration, folding woodcut diagram of the nervous system (pp. 553, 554), in all a series of over 200 woodcut anatomical illustrations, including 21 full-page and 2 double-page figural woodcuts showing the skeletal, muscular, vascular and nervous systems; all of the illustrations after an unknown artist probably from the Circle of Tiziano Vecellio. Folio, 433 x 283 mm. (17 1/16 x 11 1/8 in.), contemporary blind-panelled pigskin over wooden boards, incorporating border rolls of foliage and small repeated portrait stamps, two fore-edge brass clasps (pigskin straps possibly later), repaired at corners and a few places, upper cover bowed (with bottom half of upper joint cracked), worn and darkened, apparently re-varnished; a6 (portrait on verso) with margins renewed (cut around and inlaid to size not affecting text or image), title-page and endpages soiled and frayed at edges, c6 with section of fore-margin patched with some slight loss of text (portion of shoulder note and some letters supplied in skilful facsimile) and a marginal tear repaired, scattered foxing and dampstaining throughout (mostly marginal), some scattered marginal staining and minor worming.
