Picturesque Illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video, Consisting of Twenty-Four Views: accompanied with descriptions of the scenery, and of the costumes, manners, &c. of the inhabitants of those cities and their environs.
London: published by R. Ackerman, printed by L. Harrison, 1820 [pre-publication watermarks]. Large 4to (341 x 271 mm). 24 fine hand-colored aquatint plates, 4 folding, including one with two views after Vidal by G. Maile, J. Bluck T. Sutherland, and D. Havell. Late 19th century red pebble-grained morocco, covers with panels stamped in gilt and blind and central gilt floral wreaths, spine richly gilt in compartments and with red morocco lettering-piece, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, t.e.g. Condition: Two short tears to folds of folding plates, light marginal spotting to five plates. Provenance : Victor Aizenman, Buenos Aires bookseller's ticket to rear pastedown. a fine copy of the first edition of one of the few english color-plate books on argentina. originally issued in six montly parts, the total edition was limited to 800 copies, this one of 750 copies on ‘atlas paper. Born about 1788, Vidal joined the Royal Navy in 1808, serving as a purser for the next five decades. From 1820 to 1821, he served as secretary to Lord Lambert at St. helena. The engraved plates of his sketches formed part of Ackermann's enterprising plan to offer Spanish and South American views to English buyers. iIn 1820 began a series of books dealing with travel and scenery. The first was Picturesque Illustrations of Buenos Ayres and Monte Video, with descriptions of scenery, customs, and manners by E.E. Vidal.
