(8vo) 21.5x13 cm (8½x5"), full speckled calf, gilt tooled borders, black and red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. First Edition. A comprehensive account of the Russian Empire, including observations on natural history, geography, nationalities, social customs, the monarchy, etc. Tooke served as chaplain to the English church at St. Petersburg from 1774 to 1792, making the acquaintance of many members of the Russian nobility and episcopate, as well as a variety of learned men of letters and science of all nationalities, whom Catharine II summoned to her court. While in Russia he researched and collected the vast amount of material which he later used in the present work and his History of Russia. Lot Amendments Condition: Light wear and scuffing to leather, light rubbing to extremities, some joints starting a bit, some loss to 2 spine labels; folding map with foxing and a few small closed tears to edges, foxing to interiors; about very good.
