VIKING BRONZE ENTWINED BIRDS SWORD POMMEL 11th century AD A hollow-cast pommel-cap, U-shaped in section with central hole to the upper face to accept the end of the sword's tang; the surface with three interlaced beasts modelled in high relief in Urnes Style, each biting its neighbour, two with a lentoid wing with one notched edge; raised border and D-shaped panels to the shorter edges. 32 grams, 37 mm (1 3/4"). Very fine condition. Excessively rare. Provenance Found Boylestone, Derbyshire, UK, on 7th March 2009; accompanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme museum report.
