Half-title with limitation to verso, numbered 242 and signed by the publisher in ink. Engraved frontispiece by Copia after A.-L.Girodet and 22 engraved plates (14 after F.Gérard, 6 after Girodet and 2 unsigned, all by Baquoy, Beisson, Copia and others). (Limitation stained by original preservative, light browning and dust soiling to some extreme margins.) Contemporary half dark blue roan over blue paper covered boards, small central gilt arms to covers, red roan gilt lettering pieces to spine, uncut (discreet expert repairs at head and tail of front joint, extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance : Sir Charles Stuart Baron de Rothesay (arms to covers) - H. D. Lyon (pencil notes and cost code on front pastedown) - Colin Franklin (catalogue 4, item 37, sold on 12th Oct. 1971 for 280 to:) - Georges de Belder (sold via:) -- Bernard Quaritch (1984 catalogue 'The Neo-classical Book', part IV of the de Belder collection, item 552). THE DE ROTHESAY COPY OF THE FIRST OF THE GREAT FOLIOS PRINTED BY DIDOT AT THE LOUVRE. A large fresh copy numbered 242 of an edition limited to 251 copies. De Rothesay, younger son of Prime Minister John Stuart 3rd Earl of Bute, was British Ambassador in 1815. Ray French 70; Cohen/de Ricci 1019 (incorrect plate count).
