VLADIMIR VARLAJ (1895–1962) The Coast of Dalmatia Starting price: 25 000 CZK (943 EUR) Hammer price: 28 000 CZK (1 057 EUR) Description dimensions: 25,5 x 34,5 cm (h x w) period: 1929, Croatia The artist is an important representative of the modern Croatian art scene. In 1918, he spent a short time in Prague, where he attended the Academy alongside his friend Milivoj Uzelac (who had been in Prague since 1915 and had studied under Jan Preisler at the time). In 1919, they both returned to Zagreb, and that same year they formed the "Prague Four" - a group of four painters who had studied in Prague: Besides Varlaj and Uzelac, the other two were V. Gecan, M. Trepše and - in order to participate in the Spring Salon. The watercolor depicts the Dalmatian coast, a frequent motif in his work, and shows his characteristically soft hand and use of warm light. Watercolor on paper, signed and dated on bottom right "Vlad. Varlay 1929".
