VON NEUMANN, John and Herman H. GOLDSTINE]. INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY. Electronic Computer Project. Final report on contract no. DA-36-034-ORD-1330 . Princeton, N.J.: Institute for Advanced Study, December 1954. 4 o. Mimeographed document, printed on rectos only. Text illustrations and diagrams. Original buff mimeographed wrappers, cloth backstrip. Herman H. Goldstine's signature, dated 5/26/00, on the front wrapper; boxed. Official report made to the Department of the Army, covering the period December 1953-December 1954. In the latter half of 1953 the IAS computer was moved from its original construction site to a new location in the mathematical wing of the Institute. "Advantage was then taken of the partial disassembly required by the move to carry out several mechanical and electrical improvements on the memory unit. In addition, the control system, power supplies and cooling system were organized to make operation and maintenance much easier" (f. I-2). Weather-forecasting was a special interest of von Neumann, who dreamed that one day computers would not only be able to produce more accurate weather forecasts but might even be used eventually to control or change the weather. Goldstine [1990], no. 32. When OOC was written, OCLC cited no copies of this report. OOC 961. [ With: ] [VON NEUMANN, John.] INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY. Electronic Computer Project. Final report on contract no. DA-36-034-ORD-1646 . 2 parts. Princeton, N.J.: Institute for Advanced Study, December 1956-May 1957. Mimeographed document, printed on rectos only. 4 o. Original buff mimeographed wrappers, cloth backstrips. Part 1 (Engineering): [7] 73ff. 37 plates, text illustrations. Part 2 (Computer use): [111]ff, variously paginated. Official report made to the Department of the Army, covering the period from July 1, 1954 to December 31, 1956. Part 1 describes the operation of and engineering improvements made to the IAS computer during this period; part 2 describes the development of a consistent system of general-purpose routines (including a floating-point interpretive routine) and several scientific problems for which numerical results were obtained by the computer. Part 2's "Acknowledgments" page notes that "the late Prof. J. von Neumann, originator and director of our project, left Princeton soon after the beginning of the period covered by this report," and that "Dr. H. H. Goldstine, who has been Acting Director until 30 June 1956, has contributed to most of the problems described hereinafter." When OOC was written, OCLC cited no copies of this report. OOC 963.
