Beschreibung:

VREDEMAN de Vries, Jan (1527-ca.1604). [ Variae Architecturae Formae . Antwerp: 1601 or later]. Oblong 2° (210 x 317mm). Engraved throughout. 48 plates ?only (of 50, numbered 1-48) by Theodor Galle and ?others after Vredeman. (Lacking title, small repairs to plates 10, 21 and 48, occasional light soiling). 18th-century sheep-backed boards (spine worn). A fine selection of imaginary architecural views, many incorporating canals or water features. The first 20 oval with elaborate cornerpieces. The first edition was apparently published in 1560 by Hieronymous Cock, a new edition appeared in 1601; both of these contain only 20 plates. Vredeman de Vries died in about 1603, and Theodor Galle in 1633. This edition therefore probably appeared between 1601 and 1633. All editions are rare at auction. Berlin Kat. 2216 (incomplete) and cf. 2211-2215.
