Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Vu Cao Dam reconciles the Sino-Vietnamese tradition in which he was steeped with Western art techniques acquired at the Hanoi School of Fine Arts. He was also inspired by the Italian Primitives, and borrowed their colours and forms. The artist uses extended lines, and the refined features of the protagonists in his paintings emphasise this assimilation, evoking 16th century Italian Mannerism. Though he painted a few landscapes, Vu Cao Dam mainly focused on women. Here, woman is embodied as a maternal figure, symbolising the theme of Mother and Child as she holds her infant in her protective arms. The scene emanates the gentle, benevolent presence of the tender-eyed woman. Here again, we can see that the artist was greatly influenced by European art and representations of Italian Madonnas. The artist glorified women in all kinds of roles, giving them a central, poetic aspect through a refined touch and subtle, misty colours, while focusing on the human figure.
