WAGNER, Richard (1813-1883). Autograph musical quotation signed ('Richard Wagner), Vienna, 27 December 1862, five bars from Die Walküre , headed 'Wotan', the text 'Dieser Augen leuchtendes Paar, das oft ich lächelnd gekost', subscribed 'Auf baldiges Wiedersehen! Müde u[nd] schlaflos', one page, 4to (202 x 180mm) (somewhat browned, more intensely at margins). The quotation is 'Wotan's Farewell', from the last moments of Die Walküre . In the published libretto, the phrase begins ' Der Augen ...'. The provenance of the piece, from Wagner's stay in Vienna in 1862/3 when he was conducting excerpts from the Ring , links it intriguingly with lots 52 and 53, both of which spring from the same period.
