"The fruit of many years labor. As its title suggests, it was to combine a full exposition of algebra with its history, a feat never previously attempted by any author. The book was Wallis' major mathematical work to be published in the vernacular" (DSB). John Wallis (1616-1703) besondere wissenschaftliche Verdienste liegen in seinen Beiträgen zur Berechnung der Kreiszahl π sowie zur Entwicklung der Infinitesimalrechnung, ferner benutzte er als einer der ersten britischen Mathematiker die Methoden der analytischen Geometrie von Descartes, indem er sie u. a. auf Kegelschnitte anwandte. Seine spätes Hauptwerk Algebra enthält auch den Erstdruck von Newtons ersten Veröffentlichungen über das mathematische Objekt der unendlichen Reihe. – Titel mit breit hinterlegter Stempelrasur (dort auch mit Einriss) sowie kleinem Farbstrich. Etwas gebräunt und braunfleckig, sonst wohlerhalten.
