(Light offsetting of text onto plates, without front ?blank.) original marbled paper-cobered boards, uncut (rebacked, covers rubbed and bumped at corners). Provenance : John Donald Cambridge (bookplate). FIRST EDITION of the first work devoted to the four members of the camelidae family to be found in South America: Llama, Alpaca, Guanaco and Vicuna. Sabin 101223. William WALTON A Memoir addressed to proprietors of mountain and other waste lands, and agriculturalists of the United Kingdom, on the Naturalization of the Alpaca. London, Liverpool & Birmingham: printed by Charles Reynell for the Natural History Society of Liverpool, Smith, Elder & Co., and others, 1841. 8° (212 x 136mm). Wood-engraved plate. (Some light spotting.) Contemporary blue cloth, upper cover with gilt double fillet border, and centrally-placed gilt lettering 'Alpaca' (slight discolouration to cloth). Provenance : William Barneby (Clater Park, Herefordshire, inscription). FIRST EDITION THUS: expanded from an earlier paper published in 1841. Walton went on to publish a still larger work on the same subject in 1844. BM(NH) III,p.1398. (2)
