WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President . Autograph free frank ("Free G:Washington") on folded cover sheet (letter not present) addressed in Washington's hand to "The Honble. Elias Boudinot Esq. Elizabeth Town New Jersey," [3 November 1784], black partial Franklin mark "?NO" at extreme left, backflap with a fine, INTACT IMPRESSION OF WASHINGTON'S SEAL WITH COAT-OF-ARMS IN RED WAX, docketed in Boudinot's hand, tiny separations at fold intersections, minor spotting, seal hole repaired, but nevertheless an attractive cover. During the period from 12 December 1783, when he resigned his commission as Commander-in-Chief, and 4 December 1786, when he became a Virginia delegate to the Constitutional Convention, Washington, a private citizen, technically had no franking privilege. The present cover sheet is from a letter to Boudinot (1740-1821), who had become a trusted friend of Washington early in the Revolution, shared the hardships at Valley Forge and served as the Continental Army's Commissioner of Prisoners and later as President of Congress (see also Martha Washington's letter to him, lot ). This letter, written during the brief period when Washington was able to devote his energies fully to agriculture and the improvement of Mount Vernon, requested Boudinot send him certain seeds for "orchard grass" which Washington wished "to try...under my own management." Published in Writings , ed. J.C. Fitzpatrick, 27:494 (a photocopy is included with the lot). Provenance : An ink note in a tiny hand records: "for D.S. Reed Given by a great Grand Daughter of General Washington 1836."
