WASHINGTON, GEORGE, President . Autograph letter signed ("G:Washington") as President, to Governor George Clinton, Philadelphia, 25 December 1793. 1 full page, 4to, 225 x 190 mm. (9 x 7¼ in.), integral blank (neatly tipped to a larger sheet), small separations at folds neatly mended from verso. . CHRISTMAS GREETINGS FROM PRESIDENT WASHINGTON A letter on Christmas day, concerning the sale of the "Mohawk Lands" near Saratoga Springs jointly owned by Clinton and Washington. In November, Washington had requested a statement of sales to date. "Your favor of the 18th. inst. enclosing a statement of sales of lots in Coxburgh, belonging to us, has been duly received; and I thank you for the particular manner in which they are rendered. I did not mean to give you so much trouble; to know summarily what had been sold and what remained on hand, was all I had in view. I hereby acknowledge the receipt of a Bank note (New York) for [$1,659.50]...being the Ball[anc]e...stated on the sales above mentioned. Mrs. Washington joins me in offering you, Mrs. Clinton and family the compliments of the Season and the happy return of many, many of them..." Provenance : Hamilton, 1976. In 1784 Washington had become a partner with Clinton in a parcel of undeveloped land near Saratoga Springs; parcels were gradually sold over the next decade.
