[Head Quarters, New Windsor, N.Y.], 14 July 1779. 1 page, folio, 270 x 210mm. (10 1/2 x 8 3/4 in.), severely browned, brittle and backed, partial separations along several folds. THE CONNECTICUT RAIDS: "THIS IS A TIME OF EMERGENCY" A letter written during the British Connecticut coastal raid, a punishing Connecticut for supplying the rebel armies and attacking British ships in Long Island Sound. Washington urgently directs Lamb, the artillery commander of West Point, to issue the militia with artillery ammunition: "General Heath has informed me by a letter of the 12th dated at Amawalk, that the militia with Gen[era]l Parsons have but very little ammunition. As this is a time of emergency, it may be necessary to furnish them with some or they may be entirely destitute before they can obtain a supply from the State. I therefore request, that you will send 25,000 Cartridges to General Heath by an early conveyance, to whom I have written with respect to the distribution..." In his postscript the General explains that "He will be found below Bedford, or Ridgefield towards Norwalk..." Fitzpatrick, 15:425. The large and well-equipped British raiding party landed at New Haven on 4 July; the troops looted and burned many homes and farms in New Haven, Fairfield, Green's Farms and Norwalk. Continental opposition was inneffectual, to Washington's regret. Colonel John Lamb (1735-1800) commanded the 2d Artillery Regiment from 1777 until 1783, one of only four regiments of Continental Artillery.
