Black morocco gilt, covers with gilt-tooled floral corner-pieces, spine in six compartments, gilt-lettered in two, top edges gilt, others uncut, pastedowns with dark red central panel, white watered silk end-pages. EXTRA ILLUSTRATED with the addition of some 40 engraved and lithographic portraits and views. Provenance : William P. Olds (bookplate laid in each volume). [ With :] WASHINGTON. Partly printed document signed ("G o : Washington") as Comander-in-Chief, Continental Army, accomplished in manuscript, countersigned by Johnathan Trumbull Jr., Headquarters [New Windsor, N.Y.], 8 June 1783. 2 pp., small folio (13¾ x 8½ in). Scattered soiling, slight tears at folds . Washington signs a discharge certificate for James Adams, a drummer in a New York regiment, having served five years, and having earned a Badge of Merit. Neatly folded into vol. 1. (14)
