New Map of the Puget Sound Country, Fourth Revised Edition … A valuable compendium of useful information and complete railway and navigation guide for travellers and settlers.
No place but Seattle]: Chas. H. Baker & Co., compilers [for the Fairhaven Land Company], 1899. Engraved-map, printed in black and three colors, by Franklin Co. of Chicago. 32 1/2 x 23 in. Provenance : J.F. Edson (pencilled inscription 'From J.F. Edson'). A fascinating early promotional map of the Puget Sound area, including Seattle, Tacoma and 'Fairhaven' or Bellingham A minority of these plots are numbered, possibly an indication that they were available to settlers/investors. Information is also given about the principal products of various regions (gold, silver, iron, coal, hops, etc.), as well as the routes of the railroads (both actual and planned), and the locations of all the major cities and other settlements. Soundings in fathoms are given for a number of locations around the main harbours. The map was issued as the turn of the century approached, and the town of Fairhaven emerged from an economic slump as an important manufacturing center. Cf. Wilson, Vincent Jr. The Book of the States. Brookville, Maryland: American History Research Associates, 1972. p. 101; Washington State University Libraries, Manuscripts, Archives & Special Collections: WSU 366 G4282.P8 1899 .C43x (incorrectly dated 1889)
