1. TRUMBULL, JOHN. 1756-1843. Autograph Letter Signed (“Jn. Trumbull”), 2 pp recto and verso, 4to, New York, December 10, 1820, to S.M. Hopkins, regarding the construction of a bridge near his property, light creasing and waterstains, some restoration, leaf tipped at all edges to 11 by 15 ½ inch matte. John Trumbull was the son of Jonathan Trumbull, the only colonial governor to join the revolutionary cause. The younger Trumbull served as an aide to Washington from 1775 to 1776, but by 1777 he resigned his commission and devoted himself to the study of painting in London. In 1780 he was arrested as an American spy and imprisoned; the appeals of painters Benjamin West and John Singleton Copley led to his release. He is best remembered for his series of paintings of the American Revolutionary War, including the Battle of Bunker’s Hill, The Declaration of Independence, and The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis, among others, which contain portraits from life of the major figures of the revolution by a veteran of that war. 2. TRUMBULL, JONATHAN. 1740-1809. Autograph Letter Signed, 1 p, 4to, Hartford, CT, November 25, 1805, to General Even Huntington, regarding the return of the militia to the state, light creasing and toning, some restoration, leaf laid down to second sheet and tipped at all edges to 11 by 15 ½ inch matte. Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., elder brother of the painter, served as Washington’s military secretary from 1781 to1783, and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis and the signing of the Treaty of Paris. He writes this letter as Governor of Connecticut. 3. WALKER, BENJAMIN. 1753-1818. Document Signed (“Ben Walker”), 1 p, legal folio, New York, September 6, 1792, to John Keane Cashier of the Bank of the United States, authorizing him to pay Wharton Greeves $55.53 toward the first installment of shares in the stock of the Society for establishing useful Manufacturers, leaf creased and toned, some loss at edges (repaired), penciled notations at lower margin, tipped at all edges to larger matte. Walker served as Washington’s aide-de-damp from 1781 to 1782. 4. BAYLIES, HODIJAH. 1757-1843. Autograph Document Signed (“H. Baylies”), 1 p, 4to n.p., n.d., granting permission to the sloop Union to proceed to the Port of New York, on verso of the Union’s manifest dated October 14, 1794, leaf creased and toned (repaired), tipped at all edges to 11 by 15.5 inch matte. Baylies also served as aide to General Lincoln, as well as Washington. 5. VARICK, RICHARD. 1753-1831. 2 Autograph Documents Signed (“Richd Varick”) as Mayor of New York, 2 pp, legal folio, New York, August 9, 1792 and September 3, 1792, at lower margin of petitions registering the satisfaction of mortgages, earlier document significantly toned, both creased and repaired, tipped at all edges to 11 by 15.5 inch mount. Varick served as aide-de-camp to Benedict Arnold, and was devastated at that officer’s betrayal of the colonial forces. In the wake of Arnold’s treason, Varick was arrested, but was cleared of any wrongdoing by a court of inquiry. He later served as Washington’s private secretary until the end of the war. After the war he was elected mayor of New York City from 1791 to 1801. 6. TILGHMAN, TENCH. 1744-1786. Document Signed (“Tench Tilghman”), partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, 1 p, legal folio, Baltimore, January 13, 1786, obligating Tilghman and his partner to pay duty to the state of Maryland on the merchandise imported by the Schooner Experiment, leaf lightly foxed, mild creasing (repaired), tipped at all edges to 11 by 15.5 inch mount. Tilghman became Washington’s aide-de-camp in August of 1776 and remained on his staff until the end of the war.
