WEELKES, Thomas (d.1623). Contemporary manuscript copy of the Quintus part from the twenty-four Balletts and Madrigals for five voices of 1598, entitled Weelks his ffa la's , black ink, 24 pages, up to 10 ruled staves per page, later boards, 200 x 150mm. This contemporary copy is taken from the printed edition of the Quintus part at the Royal College of Music. In 1598 Weelkes was in the service of Edward Darcye, Groom of the Privy Chamber, to whom he dedicated his Balletts and Madrigals to five voyces . He has been regarded as the greatest of all madrigalists and is renowned for his use of novel harmonies and expressiveness.
