CGC certified: Good (2.0). Off-white to white pages. Cover: Don Heck. Art by Rudy Palias, Alberta Tewks, Ken Landau, Alvah Null. GPAnalysis: No reported sales in this grade. A 1.8 sold for $140 in July 2020; a 2.5 sold for $184 in November 2019. "Issue #6 contains a Kenneth Landau story, 'Decapitation,' wherein Homer Bobbie kills his wife in frustration over her obsession with radio quiz shows. Subsequently appearing on such a program, he wins first prize: his wife's head! Yuck...." — George Suarez, Tales Too Terrible To Tell #4. NEC: 1991-92, p. 35. In an apparent instance of EC ripping off a rival, Johnny Craig's notorious decapitation cover for Crime SuspenStories #22 (April-May 1954) illustrates a story in which a man chops off his wife's head and gets exposed on a TV quiz show. TV quiz shows were boffo entertainment in the 1950s. Shows like The $64,000 Question, Twenty-One, Tic Tac Dough, and Dotto delivered wholesome thrills and the promise of big payouts for lucky contestants. A huge scandal resulted when it was revealed that the outcomes of all four of these shows, and others as well, were rigged by the producers. Robert Redford's 1994 film "Quiz Show" postulated this scandal as the event that caused America's "loss of innocence" (funny how we Americans are always misplacing our innocence). The 1950s comic-book scare and the '50s quiz show crisis both hinged upon ordinary Americans' sense of betrayal by trusted media outlets, foreshadowing our own widespread distrust of mainstream media. A deluxe limited edition of 12 hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a small number of softcovers. 400 lots, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcover $40, deluxe hardcover with dust jacket and limitation plate $200. Eight of the 12 hardcovers are pre-ordered and the rest will go quickly, so reserve yours now.
