WESTMORLAND, John Fane, eleventh Earl of (1784-1859). A collection of letters and documents relating to Lord Westmorland's diplomatic mission and military service, including letters addressed to him in Italy, 1829-1838, letters relating to Greece, 1815-1850, correspondence with Lord Aberdeen, 1829-1848, and documents relating to his orders and medals, membership of learned societies and military appointments, 1805-1858, including also retained copies of letters by Lord Westmorland (signed as Lord Burghesh before 1847), altogether approximately 273 letters, 1200 pages, various sizes (330 x 210mm and smaller) , address leaves, seals, blank leaves, a few printed items (a few of the letters worn and discoloured), bound in four volumes, each with index, half roan and marbled boards (tears in spines). The collection comprises: I. George Hamilton Gordon, 4th Earl of ABERDEEN (1784-1866). Twenty autograph letters signed (as Foreign Secretary), mostly London, 1829-1848 , and sixty-nine letters (copies) by Lord Westmorland, various places, mostly Berlin , discussing the Coburg titles, the problems of the King of Greece, Russian policy, Queen Victoria's visit to the Chateau d'Eu, and related matters, and two letters by Sir Robert Peel II. Forty-five letters addressed to Lord Westmorland as envoy in Florence by official and private correspondents, 1829-1838 , on diplomatic, social and literary matters, some recalling the Peninsular War, one describing Lima, two referring to W.S. Landor's expulsion from Tuscany, together with copies of seven letters by Lord Westmorland. III. Thirty-five letters on the affairs of Greece, 1815-1850 , by correspondents including Colonel Church (i.e. Sir Richard Church, generalissimo of the Greek insurgents in 1827), Sir Edward Codrington and others, reporting on the Greek insurrection, the situation before Navarino, the capitulation of Athens, the proposed offer of the Greek throne to Prince Leopold of Coburg, with copies of letters by Lord Westmorland. IV. Documents and letters (originals and copies) relating to honours and promotions conferred upon Lord Westmorland by foreign powers (Austria, Tuscany, Sicily, Russia, Denmark, Belgium etc.), and George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria and others referring to his learned interests, approximately 96 items . The 11th Earl of Westmorland was ADC to Wellington at Talavera, Military Commissioner in Germany, Extraordinary Envoy to Florence, and to Naples. From 1841-1851 he was resident Minister in Berlin, and in 1855 he participated in the Congress of Vienna with Lord John Russell He was honoured by both Oxford and Cambridge, and also a gifted musician, the composer of numerous works, and founder of the Royal Academy of Music.
