Wheatstone Stereoscope Perspective Viewer, c. 1870 and earlier Stereoscope for images of 4 ¾ x 6 in. (12 x 15 cm), viewer 18 x 6 ¼ x 6 ¼ in. (46 x 16 x 16 cm). Charles Wheatstone's stereoscope, also known as the mirror stereoscopic viewer, used 90° angled mirrors to draw in the eye of the observer. His design required both pictures in the pair be reversed laterally and had the advantage of being able to cope with large pictures. Wheatstone presented his seminal paper on binocular vision in June 1838 and is still regarded as one of the originators of stereoscopy. His viewer represents an important addition to serious stereoscopic collections. – Literature: Museum für Verkehr und Technik, "Stereoskopie", pp. 19–21. – Vanessa R. Schwartz (editor), "The Nineteenth Century Visual Culture Reader", pp. 87–88.
