WIENECKE, Karl. Autograph manuscript, 'Schiffahrtskunde', Navigations-Schule, Hamburg, 1884. In German, in brown, red and blue inks, decorated title, two highly painted celestial maps on conjoined folding leaves (see illustration on rear endpapers) and three separate coloured depictions of stars around the Great Bear, one pen-and-ink drawing, numerous diagrams, occasionally coloured (a few with depictions of sailing vessels), 183 leaves, 333 x 211mm, a few blanks (general light browning throughout). Contemporary cloth binding. Provenance : given by Wienecke to a friend, one Herr Hesselmann, and by Hesselmann to his son-in-law Captain Wilhelm Stranghöner – presented by the latter to the Seefahrtschule Hamburg in March 1960 (typed note; ink stamp). A course on navigation at sea. These notes from the navigation school in Hamburg being with a grounding in mathematics before proceeding to navigation ('Geographische Steuermannskunst') in all its aspects and concluding with sections on astronomy, spherical trigonometry, lunar distances and tides.
