The attractive partially printed document bearing large flourished letters at the heading "Wilhelm, by Grace of God, King of Prussia" is an upgrading patent, and states `We have decided that First Lieutenant Robert Melms from the 2nd Kurhessisch Infantry Regiment, due to his good qualities and knowledge of war, is graciously promoted to Captain of Infantry which is hereby announced and in full effect by this patent. He served Us and Our King´s House with loyalty, faithfully and obedient he fought by day or night, inland and by sea, when ordered by his superiors. He executed all orders, including war incidences willingly, under threats of life and physical condition with effort and diligence. Furthermore he behaved like a loyal servant and righteous war officer..´ A very large and good bold example signature of the Emperor alongside a large blind embossed seal with coat of arms. With blank integral leaf. Together with a draft patent for a former promotion of same officer Robert Melms, to be attended by Wilhelm II, unsigned, two pages, folio, Berlin, 27th January 1905, in German. The patent stating that Sargent Melms has finished his courses at the Unteroffiziersschule in Bieberich and is now ready for his promotion to first lieutenant of infantry. Also bearing a blind embossed seal.
