Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, King of Prussia (1859-1941). Visitors' Book of the Kaiser, boldly titled in gilt on upper cover "Wilhelm II Deutscher Kaiser Koenig von Preussen," documenting guests and meetings at various locales (including Buckingham Palace, Amalienburg, Windsor, St. Petersburg and Constantinople), 1897-1911. 4to, 64 leaves (128pp.) on 80 leaves specially printed with Wilhelm's monogram at top, interleaved with sheets of pink blotting paper. Specially bound for the Kaiser in dark blue morocco, upper cover gilt-lettered and with the royal arms, decorative endpapers with the Prussian eagle (lightly rubbed) . KAISER WILHELM II'S PRE-WAR GUESTBOOK, containing approximately 700 signatures and inscriptions of Dukes and Duchesses, Barons and Baronets, diplomats, ministers, Generals, Field-Marshals, Admirals, primates and prelates, artists, scholars and courtiers from England, Germany, France, Italy, Russia, Turkey, Montenegro, Belgium, Romania, Japan, Monaco, Denmark and elsewhere. Included are the signatures and inscriptions of "Mr. and Mrs. Winston Churchill" (p.54r), "Lord and Lady Edward Spencer Churchill" (6v), Lord Kitchener, Baden Powell (56v), Prince Galitzin, Prince N. Obolensky, Rear Admiral Jellicoe (victor of Jutland, 22r), Lord Roberts, Theodore Roosevelt (26r), John Milton Hay (7r), Neville Chamberlain, Lord Rosebery, A.J. Balfour, Adelaide Ristori (16), John Singer Sargent (47r), George Trevelyan, Rupert Guinness, Lawrence Alma-Tadema Philip and Leopold of Saxe-Coburg, The Archbishop of Canterbury (49r), and hundreds of others, many signatures occurring more than once. An especially lavish guestbook which provides a remarkable window into the elite European society during this troubled transitional period, when relations between Great Britain and Germany began to steadily disintegrate. The plethora of high-ranking British and German army and naval officers represented here is particularly striking, since in many cases these same officers were to be combatants in the approaching Great War.
