Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition During the Years 1838-1842.
Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard, 1845. 6 vols, including the atlas. 8vo (275x180 mm). Illustrated with 62 plates (of 64) within the text and 5 folding maps in the atlas. Publisher’s brown cloth stamped in gilt and blind. Condition: foxing; binding worn and chipped. Provenance : H. N. Brinsmade (contemporay signatures); Beloit College (blindstamps). one of 1000 copies. This third issue set, of which only 1000 copies were printed, is extremely difficult to find with the original bindings in good condition and is generally termed the First Trade Edition. It is preceded only by the unobtainable official First Edition of 1844 (only 100 sets printed of which 25 were destroyed by fire) and the quarto presentation edition of 1845 of which only 150 copies were published.
