The subject identified, signed and dated "May, 1837," and with presentation inscription on verso. Oil on pressed-board panel, 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in., in a period gold-painted gesso frame. Condition: Very good. Note: Theodore Frelinghuysen (1787-1861) was a lawyer, statesman, and patriot, born in Somerset County, New Jersey, graduating from Princeton, class of 1804. He was a United States Senator from 1829-35, an unsuccessful Vice Presidental candidate on the Whig ticket in 1844 with Hennry Clay, Chancellor at New York University, and President of Rutgers College. The portrait is sold with a small folio hand-colored lithograph on paper of Frelinghuysen, 13 1/4 x 10 in., in a period frame, (toning, not examined out of frame).
