William Fay (1872-1947) An Avenue of Trees Oil on board, 19 x 24cm (7.5 x 9.5'') Signed with initials Provenance: M?ire MhicAog?in & Seoirse MacAodhag?in William (Willie) Fay was born in Dublin in November 1872 and attended Belvedere College. After touring Ireland, Scotland and Wales with a theatre company he returned to Dublin and worked with his brother Frank in staging productions in various halls in the city before forming W.G. Fay's Irish National Dramatic Company. Both Willie and Frank were instrumental in founding the Abbey Theatre but fell out with their fellow directors in 1908. Willie Fay spent the next few years in the United States before moving to London where he worked on the stage and subsequently in films. He died there in October 1947.
