WILLIAM MAKEPEACE THACKERAY (1811-1863); WILKIE COLLINS (1824-1889); ROBERT STEWART VISCOUNT CASTLEREAGH (1769-1822); ARTHUR WELLESLEY, DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852); SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1852); QUEEN VICTORIA (1819-1901); GEORGE IV AS PRINCE OF WALES (1762-1830); & OTHERS A folio album containing an extensive collection of some 120 autograph letters and signatures of 18th and 19th century personalities with various engraved portraits, lithographs and newspaper cuttings, in green morocco with gilt tooling (scratched and rubbed, worn at edges), comprising LITERARY including a one-page autograph letter, signed 'W.M. Thackeray', 8, to Lady Stuart, with the light-hearted comment 'I know perfectly well that this note is not merely an answer to a kind invitation, but a specimen of original handwriting:... I walk into the trap fully aware that it is such', with a charming sketch of a lion with his paw in a trap; a three-page autograph letter, signed 'J.S. Mill' enclosing a book 'written by a young man now at Cambridge'; the Art Journal of the so called 'Ladies of Llangollen' [Lady Eleanor Butler and the Hon. Miss Sarah Ponsonby], dated 1787, 32pp, 12; a two-page autograph letter, signed by Wilkie Collins, dated 1866 regarding photographic portraits; plus others including Anthony Trollope, Edward Bulwer Lytton, Mary Russell Mitford, Thomas Carlyle the Countess of Blessington, Count D'Orsay, Augusta Ada Lovelace [daughter of Lord Byron], Richard Cumberland and Charles Reade; POLITICAL figures, including a one-page document, signed 'Castlereagh' as Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, 14 April 1798, 4, being the warrant for the arrest of a Doctor Magee of Randalstown who 'has been concerned with treasonable practices'; a two-page autograph letter from Gladstone, June 27 1846, 8, to Lord Arthur Lennox, offering him the Governorship of Newfoundland; also William Pitt Earl of Chatham, Jeremy Bentham, Robert Peel Palmerston, John Bright, Richard Cobden and Canning amongst others; MILITARY figures, with several items of correspondence from the Duke of Wellington; and letters from the Duke of Cumberland, Lord Raglan and Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy; ARTISTS, including a four-page autograph letter, signed 'Thos. Lawrence', October 7 1826, to Lord Whitworth, regarding exhibiting his portrait, with letters from Lord Leighton, David Wilkie Henri Vernet and cut signature of John Flaxman; MEN OF SCIENCE, such as Humphrey Davy, Charles Lyell, John Richardson Richard Owen, the historian A.W. Kingslake; ROYALTY, and various members of the nobility, including a document, signed 'Victoria R' at the head, 9 May 1838, 4, commanding George William Duke of Argyll be present at the Coronation of Queen Victoria on 28 June 1838, countersigned 'Norfolk E M', and a 'begging letter' from George ['Beau'] Brummell to the Duke of Argyll, 'evils increase upon me', he says; plus other personalities including a fragment of a letter signed Florence Nightingale regarding officers advances; Elizabeth Fry; and Henry Irving; together with a folder of loose letters, with a letter signed from George IV as Prince of Wales, from Carlton House, 1p, 4, to Richard Brinsley Sheridan 'for God's sake come immediately you are quite mad if you do not'; an autograph letter, from Mrs Caroline Norton [grand-daughter of Sheridan], 3pp, 12, to the Hon.
