The human figure, usually female, and landscape were his other thematic staples. By the early 1960s, he was moving towards a relatively abstract phase, which he did periodically. The human figure, usually female, and landscape were his other thematic staples. By the early 1960s, he was moving towards a relatively abstract phase, which he did periodically. But his work was never entirely abstract. It was virtually always tied to motifs drawn from the kitchen and the coastal environment. By this time as well, the extreme stylization and hieroglyphic character of Egyptian art were significant influences.
