His later novel Clotel (1853) is considered the first novel written by an African American and he also became the first published African American playwright (1856). Scarce, OCLC locates 5 copies. Condition: Foxing, especially to frontispiece tissue guard, toning to pages. Bumped corners and wear to edges, spine slightly cocked. Pencil marking to p. 130. Some brown spots.
