Audubon (one figure of plate 4), all by Lizars, two wood-engravings in text. (One leaf with paper flaw affecting two words, plate 25 with two short marginal tears, a few plates closely trimmed and with captions shaved, some occasional offsetting.) Contemporary green half morocco, spines gilt with ornithological tools (a bit rubbed). Provenance : Alfred J. Chomley, Newton (armorial bookplate); H. Bradley Martin (bookplate in portfolio; Sotheby's New York, 7 June 1989, sale lot 234). This early joint edition of Wilson and Bonaparte's text was edited by William Jardine and combines all of Wilson's American Ornithology with the first three volumes of Bonaparte's. His final volume did not appear until the year after this edition. Lizars reduced the plates of the 1808 first folio edition for this octavo edition. Bonaparte's continuation first appeared in folio from 1825-1833. According to Ayer/Zimmer and McGill/Wood, this octavo edition is found with the backgrounds uncolored; the plates here, however, are all fully colored.
