A group of drawings, letters and manuscripts, comprising: 6 drawings, 1 autograph letter, 1 autograph manuscript signed, 1 page of autograph notes, plus an autograph letter signed by George Ord, some of the drawings apparently related to illustrations in Wilson's American Ornithology (Philadelphia 1808-14), together 10 items, each inserted in a mylar envelope in an album bound in green morocco, upper cover gilt-lettered "Alexander Wilson." CONTENTS 1) Drawing, probably depicting Wilson's Plover (as shown in American Ornithology , vol. 9, plate 73), pen-and-ink and watercolor, 130 x 153mm. (5 1/8 x 6 1/16 in.), top edge irregularly trimmed, pencil inscription "drawn by A. Wilson" at bottom. 2) Drawing of an unknown marine bird, pen-and-ink and watercolor, 130 x 153mm. (5 1/8 x 6 1/16 in.), small hole in blank portion, pencil inscription "A. Wilson" at bottom 3) Drawing of six birds, a preliminary sketch (published in American Ornithology , vol. 4, plate 29), pen-and-ink and watercolor, 207 x 130mm. (8 1/16 x 5 1/8 in.), light foxing 4) Drawing of a nesting bird, pen-and-ink and watercolor, 80 x 132 mm. (3 1/8 x 5 3/16 in.), pencil inscription at bottom "A. Wilson" 5) Drawing of the heads of two birds, pen-and-ink over pencil, 231 x 140 mm. (9 1/16 x 5 1/2 in.) 6) Drawing of an unidentified bird, pencil, 187 x 425mm. (7 3/8 x 17 3/4 in.) irregular, pencil inscription at bottom "A. Wilson" 6) Autograph letter signed (" AlexWilson") to Samuel M. Hopkins, New York, 26 September 1808, one page, 4to, forwarding a prospectus for "a New Work on the Natural History of this Country" 7) Autograph manuscript signed ("AlexWilson"), verses headed: "Lines Written at the country seat of Mr. C. Harrison On the Banks of the James river, Virginia January 1809," one page, 4to, small hole affecting one letter, occasional verse comprising 12 lines 8) Autograph notes (unsigned), one page, oblong, apparently notes regarding the marine birds reported in Cook's Voyages 9) George Ord. Autograph letter signed to Matthew Barr of Paisley; Philadelphia, 9 May 1858, 4 pages, 12mo , inquiring about the project of a monument to Wilson, "him whom I honoured as a friend and loved as a brother."
