American Ornithology; or the Natural History of the Birds of the United States.
New York: Collins & Co., and Philadelphia: Harrison Hall, 1828-1829. 3 vols of text, plus the plate vol. 8vo (250x150 mm) and small folio (365x285 mm). Plate vol containing 76 hand-colored engraved plates. Text vols in contemporary boards, rebacked in red morocco to style. The plate vol in antique style panelled speckled calf gilt. Condition : foxing to the plates as usual, text vols uncut, some restoration along the inner margins and hinges of the text vols, one blank detached. Provenance : George F. Kimble (early owner’s signature on the titles of the text). the first great work of american ornithology. This being the second full edition, issued after Wilson’s death, which is often preferred over the first edition due to the better quality of the plates. “The hand-colored drawings in the Atlas are from the original copper-plates . . . colored anew from fresh or preserved material, with pigments which seem to have been of better quality than those used by Wilson” (Zimmer).
