WILSON, Woodrow and KING GEORGE V. Photograph signed ("Woodrow Wilson"), as President and ("George R. I."), as King of England, London, 31 December 1918. 16 x 12 in., with mount. . Signed along lower edge of first mount.
WILSON, Woodrow and KING GEORGE V. Photograph signed ("Woodrow Wilson"), as President and ("George R. I."), as King of England, London, 31 December 1918. 16 x 12 in., with mount. . Signed along lower edge of first mount. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND STRIKING IMAGE, showing the heads of state of the two allied powers at the end of World War I. Wilson stands with George V at his left. The President is dressed in top hat and coat (oddly, his left pant leg is noticeably cuffed but his right is not). To his left stands His Majesty George V in full dress uniform, a saber on his left hip. Wilson traveled to Europe just a month after the Armistice for the Paris peace talks that resulted in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. The American President was greeted with wild acclaim in several European capitals, where hundreds of thousands of ordinary citizens turned out to cheer the man whose 14-Point program seemed to offer a way to peace and stability. But while countless, squares, boulevards and strasses still bear Wilson's name today, his vision of international cooperation and stability did not bear fruit.
