Boudoir cabinet card. Albumen print. Image: 19x11 cm (7½x4¼"); card: 21.4x13.2 cm (8½x5¼"). Signed in negative with Fiske's photograph no. 469. Captioned by hand. Although listed in the facsimile advertisement "Fiske's Views of Yosemite & Big Trees" on p. 52 of Hickman & Pitts, the image is not reproduced. A close friend of Yosemite National Park's first Superintendent Galen Clark, George Fiske (1835–1918) was the official photographer for California's first national park. Fiske's photographs in James Mason Hutchings' In the Heart of the Sierras was the inspiration for Ansel Adams' first visit to Yosemite. In an acerbic moment, Adams weighed in, "I really can’t get excited at Watkins and Muybridge—I do get excited at Fiske. I think he had the better eye." (Hickman & Pitts, 1980). Fiske photographs are seldom seen at auction as his legacy was significantly affected by two fires (1904 and 1943) which decimated his archive, the first of which leading to the suicide of the photographer. From the collection of Jack and Beverly Waltman.
