Albums are approx. 30x24 cm.( (11¾x9”), cloth backed with leather. Important and fascinating archive of correspondence, with related material such as wanted posters, invoices, etc., directed to the wardens of the California State Prison at San Quentin, mostly A.G. Hinman, although some are to Hinman in Gilroy. Many of the letters are on billheads from various law enforcement agencies, detective bureaus, insurance companies, etc., mostly in California but also from other states. Nine of the letters have original albumen photograph of criminals and fugitives attached. Most of the letters regard law enforcement matters, identification of suspects in custody, discharge and transport of prisoners, etc. Also, a relatively small number of wanted posters, several from Wells, Fargo. A few examples: From the Yolo County District Attorny, “Dear Sir, Enclosed please find photos [one is attached to the letter] of a man who goes by the name of J.G. MacFarland we have him arrested upon 3 charges of burglary committed in this county. I understand he has served a time in San Quentin…” From the U.S. Marshall in Idaho: “Yours of the 26th ultimo is at hand. I have just returned from Court at Blackfoot. Six Polygamists were convicted & sentenced to the Penty. Mostly 3 or 4 mos. terms. The brethren will be given all attention possible in courts hereafter…” From P.G. Ferrar in Missouri: “…I wish to get some information in regard to one Thomas Reed who was convicted of murder and sent to penitentury. I don not no the county from which he was sent said Thomas Reed has a brother who’s name is Gary W. Reed who told me that he witnessed the murder and said that some body handed his brother Tom a knife, and that he G.W. Reed left California the next day now said G.W. Reed is a dangerous and troublesome man, from what he has said in regard to the murder in California and his bad character in Missouri has aroused my suspicion that he was an accomplice in the murder…” Lot Amendments Condition: Binders well worn, front covers detached; some internal wear, contents very good overall.
