WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig (1889-1951). Autograph letter signed (‘Ludwig Wittgenstein’) to Moritz Schlick, [postmarked Cambridge, 18 February 1929], in German, in pencil, two pages, large 4to (some browning in upper left quarter of p.1, soiling at folds), envelope (worn). Wittgenstein has decided to remain in Cambridge for a couple of terms in order to work on visual space and other things (‘den Gesichtsraum & andere Dinge zu bearbeiten’), but will be back in Vienna at Easter, and will then pass on his news, though it won’t be much (‘und dann werde ich alles mitteilen was mitzuteilen ist. Es wird nicht viel sein’). He encloses a newspaper article which a friend sent to amuse him, but which does not amuse him at all, nor will it Schlick, commenting scornfully, ‘I need not say that there can be nothing on earth meaner than a Viennese newspaper’ (‘Ich brauche nicht zu sagen daß es etwas hundsgemeineres als eine Wiener Zeitung nicht auf der Welt geben kann‘), and asking Schlick whether he is not willing to react in both their names. The letter concludes with greetings to all the Vienna Circle. Moritz Schlick (1882-1936), a founding further of logical positivism and the central figure in the Vienna Circle, was a key influence on Wittgenstein's decision to return to philosophy in the late 1920s after a ten-year interruption. The Moritz Schlick Nachlass, including copies of his correspondence, forms part of the Vienna Circle Archive at the Noord-Hollands Archief in Haarlem.
