WITTMAN, William. Travels in Turkey, Asia–Minor, Syria, and Across the Dessert into Egypt During the Years 1799, 1800, and 1801… London: T. Gillet for Richard Phillips 1803. 4to (273 x 210 mm). Engraved folding frontispiece, 21 engraved plates including 16 hand–colored, engraved folding map, large folding facsimile of a firman (some mild toning to plates, offsetting to text from plates, marginal browning to foldouts). Contemporary half olive calf gilt, marbled sides, 5 compartments with 4 flat raised bands gilt, intricate gilt tooling in 3 compartments, remainder with gilt lettering, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers (joints and boards a bit rubbed, spine ends professionally repaired). Provenance: Anthony and Leonie de Crosson (bookplate); gifted to F. & E. Cramer–Roberts (inscription on bookplate from de Crosson). FIRST EDITION. Wittman was surgeon to the British Military Mission acting with the army of the Grand Vizier between 1799 and 1801. Included in the above work is Wittman’s observations on the plague.
