Women's Suffrage: The Phyllis and Jim Bratt CollectionAMERICAN SUFFRAGECollection of six pro- and anti-suffrage badges, comprising: three celluloid 'Votes for Women' pins in gold and one 'Votes for Women Patriotism' pin depicting the American flag and eagle; two celluloid anti-suffrage pins ('Opposed to Woman Suffrage', 'Vote No on Woman Suffrage'), paper manufacturers labels on reverse (Bastain Brothers New York, Whitehead & Hoag Newark, Brunt & Co San Francisco etc.), 20mm. diameter and smaller (6)Saleroom noticesThe Phyllis & Jim Bratt Woman's Suffrage Collection (lots 261-282) "Shortly after we moved to London in 1992 we began seeing posters for "The Purple White & Green; Suffragettes in London 1906-14." I was immediately intrigued because my grandmother was a suffragist in rural Illinois back in her day. Although they were not militants, she and her three sister worked hard for the cause. "Jim and I found our way to the Museum of London and I was overwhelmed with the extraordinary exhibition. We began our collection shortly after that, first with postcards (which became lessons in social history), and then with other items of the movement. The highlight was obtaining the tea set at auction. We had sought at least a cup and saucer for our collection, but here was an entire set with great provenance. To say we were thrilled is an understatement. "Adding to this collection provided so much joy to our time in London. Finding each piece was a treasure hunt, on which we enjoyed to the fullest" (Phyllis Bratt).
