Borra numbered to 57, plate one on 3 sheets forming a panoramic view, 3 full-page engravings of inscriptions. (Scattered spotting and browning, short marginal tear to U1.) Contemporary sprinkled calf gilt, spine in 8 compartments with 7 raised bands, gilt morocco lettering piece laid in (rubbed, upper cover detached, lower hinge cracked). The plates were engraved by Pierre Fourdrinier Thomas Major and J.S. Muller, Jr., after drawings by Borra, the Italian architect who accompanied Wood and James Dawkins on their tour of Asia Minor in 1750-51. Wood, accompanied by James Dawkins, John Bouverie and the Italian artist and architect Giovanni Battista Borra, travelled extensively in the Levant, reaching the relatively unvisited sites of Palmyra and Balbec in 1751. He published The Ruins of Palmyra in 1753, and The Ruins of Balbec four years later. "Both publications on these unfamiliar sites were important architectural source books" (Blackmer).
