A carved wooden naval figurehead bust of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, made up of 3 conjoined pieces of oak, each piece of 3-4 inches thick, with some cut-ins around the piece, [New York: c, 1858,] small chip on the right side of the nose and a few small chips on the reverse side at the base, some stress cracks, a few filed in. Height 37.5 inches (950 mm); width 13 inches (330 mm). An interesting American naval figurehead after Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, likely for the USS Commodore Perry, commissioned in 1858. There are two paintings, from the 1930s, of an identical figurehead housed in the National Gallery of Art, and the Roosevelt Library. Two identical wooden figureheads appeared at auction with Christie's, in 2001 and in 2007, both were cataloged as the likeness of Andrew Jackson
