ONE OF 40 COPIES FOR SUBSCRIBERS TO THE HOGARTH PRESS, WITH HAND-PRINTED SLIP PASTED TO FRONT FREE ENDPAPER, FILLED OUT FOR OTTOLINE MORRELL BY THE AUTHOR, SIGNED 'VIRGINIA WOOLF' AND DATED 'OCT. 1922' BY HER. With Morrell's reading notes pencilled at rear, and her marginal pencil markings in the text. Woolf wrote to Morrell on 1 November 1922: 'It gives me great pleasure that you should like Jacob. I had many doubts whether it would mean anything to anybody. It's all very well writing the things one enjoys writing - and I did this - but one does want, too, that some people should like it as well. Naturally I am very glad that you should be one of them ... We have just ordered a second edition of a thousand; and now I look forward to sneers and jeers in all quarters, and a loss of so many pounds - This, as you see, is a hint to you, who receive so many such hints, to be good enough to tell people to spend 7/6 on it.'
