WORDSWORTH, WILLIAM. Autograph letter signed ("Wm Wordsworth") to George Lewis Prentiss, Rydal Mount, 23 March 1843. 4 pages, 4to, small archival tape repairs at margins, otherwise fine. A POET INQUIRES ABOUT MISSISSIPPI BONDS. Wordsworth inquires on behalf of family members who own Mississippi bonds, whose soundness is in question. His family "owing to various misfortunes, are in very narrow circumstances," and "nothing remains for the suffering parties but patience and hope; for as to the proposal so kindly made of seeking redress through legal process...they have no funds for acting upon that." He expresses astonishment at "the depth and extent of the indignation excited in your country by this shameless dishonesty," and writes, in closing: "I send (by way of slight return for you and your brother's kindness) to each of you the last verses from my pen." Refering to the recently completed poem 'Grace Darling.' Published in Letters , no.1679 ("Ms. untraced").
